A day after the successful test launch of Agni-V fulfilled a ''dream'' seen in 1980's, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is now eyeing to acquire anti-satellite capability.
An emphatic DRDO Chief and Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri Dr VK Saraswat said that Agni-V has given them the capability to engage satellites in space. ''Agni-V has opened many avenues in Long Range missiles like launch of satellites and engaging satellite in its orbits.''
Elaborating more on this the DRDO chief said that anti-satellite engagement requires good boost capability so that it can reach an altitude of 800km. Then one should have guidance to hit the satellite.
''Agni-V gives you boosting capability. Instead of the third stage we will have a 'Kill vehicle' to boom it. Advanced seeker developed in the country will be put . Satellite position will be given to the kill vehicle. Depending on what damage needed to be done - whether a kinetic kill is required or a shrapnel needed to damage the satellite,'' Dr. Saraswat added.
According to DRDO chief engaging satellite is easier as it has a pre-defined orbit. However, he quickly added that presently there is no policy for anti-sat missiles, the technology is there.
