Latest Russian flying machine to join IAF

New Delhi, Feb 16: Indian Air Force (IAF) will Friday induct the latest Russian Mi-17 V5 armed helicopters in its inventory that will boost the force’s capability to undertake all weather, day and night missions safely. Its highly ballistic resistant surface would be an advantage for the IAF while carrying out duties in the naxal-infested areas.

The upgraded version of Mi-17 helicopters already in service with the IAF, the new machines with its substantial and effective firepower with the latest and more powerful engines will greatly enhance the payload carriage capability at higher altitudes.

The Mi-17 V5 has state-of-the-art avionics and onboard Navigation Systems. It has onboard weather radar, state of the art autopilot and is compatible with the latest Generation (Gen-III) Night vision Goggles.

“With this, the helicopter can undertake all-weather, day and night operations in any kind of terrain,” said an IAF statement. The IAF has been undertaking surveillance and transport duties for the paramilitary forces engaged in anti-naxal operations and has suffered casualties in the past.

“The entire airframe has a high degree of ballistics tolerance and is crash-resistant.  It also comes equipped with an emergency flotation system.  Its internal cabin volume is sufficient for transporting fully-equipped infantry soldiers for specialised operations,” the statement said.

In 2008, India had signed an agreement with Russia to induct 80 Mi-17 V5 helicopters for strengthening IAF’s helicopter fleet for high altitude Air Maintenance Ops, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Mission and Transport Operations.

These helicopters will replace the ageing fleet of Mi-8s.

The IAF first inducted helicopters in the year 1954.  They have operated in Siachen Glacier, the highest battlefield in the world and have also proven their mettle in the UN missions.

The IAF presently have plans for procuring over 230 helicopters including heavy, medium and light utility and attack choppers.  It has also placed orders for procuring 12 VVIP helicopters for ferrying the President, Prime Minister and other important dignitaries in the country.
