Government clears promotion boards, new policy still under review

Government has cleared the two promotion boards for Brigadiers to Major General and for Major General to Lieutenant General after a delay of about five months. The development is going to affect about 60 officers who were facing the possibility of retiring with the government sitting on the issue since October 2011.

32 Brigadiers were cleared for promotion to Major General and 14 Major Generals were due for promotion as Lieutenant Generals. The Defence Ministry has sent the list of the Major Generals due for Lieutenant General to the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC).

The new promotion policy, framed under General VK Singh, that gave greater say to the seven army commanders in the promotion of the Major Generals. The Defence Ministry had put the promotions on hold and sent the policy to the Law Ministry for consideration. Now as the government gave a go ahead for the promotion, a  decision on the policy will be given once the Eastern Army Commander Lieutenant General Bikram Singh takes over as the Army Chief.
